Meet the Team

Jennifer Long

Senior Partner/Partner

Jennifer Long has been practicing family law for over 20 years.  She has successfully supported and assisted countless clients to resolve the issues arising from separation or divorce over the years.  Jennifer has focused her practice on Markham and Stouffville (York Region) as well as Toronto, Durham Region but also represents clients in Toronto, and surrounding areas.

Jennifer's experience, empathy, and client-focused approach set her apart. She is known for truly listening to her clients—taking the time to understand their unique circumstances and goals, to achieve an outcome that best meets their particular interests.   Whether guiding clients through negotiation, mediation, or litigation, Jennifer brings strategic insight and genuine care to every case.  Jennifer is committed to empowering her clients with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to make informed decisions and move forward with confidence.

As a collaboratively trained lawyer, Jennifer is able to offer her clients a respectful, solutions-focused alternative to traditional litigation. This approach allows families to resolve disputes through open communication and teamwork, resulting in far more lasting agreements, and with respect and dignity.

Wherever possible, Jennifer works hard to assist her clients in resolving their disputes outside of court, recognizing that the court system cannot always account for the complex and often emotionally fraught nature of family law matters..

However, if Court intervention is required, Jennifer’s years of courtroom experience make her a passionate, skilled and formidable advocate for her clients.

Jennifer is a member of the Ontario Association of Collaborative Professionals; the York Region Law Association; the Durham Law Association; and 100 Women Who Care Durham and Stouffville.

In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys relaxing with a good book, spending time with her family, and of course, throwing barbells around a gym.

Kat Kumka

Managing Partner

Kat possesses a BA in psychology, Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work which she completed concurrently with her Juris Doctorate in Law.

Kat brings a unique perspective to her family law practice, grounded in nearly a decade of experience working in various clinical mental health settings with children, youth, and their families. Her clinical background and experience working with families and children provides her with unique skills and knowledge, which inform her client-centered, child focused and trauma informed approach to serving her family law clients.

Kat completed joint articles at two boutique family law firms in Toronto. She has since gained invaluable experience representing clients in Court on a variety of multifaceted family law matters. Kat not only understands the parenting aspects of family law; she has demonstrated her ability to navigate various financial issues arising from separation or divorce, having worked on matters involving complex financial landscapes.

Prior to becoming a family lawyer, Kat worked with children, youth and adults with complex mental health presentations, providing individual therapy and developing, adapting and facilitating a Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills group for adolescents. Kat’s particular interest in treating suicidal and self-injurious behavior led her to working with individuals presenting with borderline personality disorder and obtain training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Kat also has experience writing social histories for the court in youth justice matters to inform decisions pertaining to bail, sentencing and dangerous offender hearings.

Kat Kumka's family law experience, coupled with her education and experience as a registered social worker, provides her with the unique ability to understand, and truly see her clients. Kat exudes empathy, compassion and respect, providing her clients with both the support and the tools to successfully navigate their family law issues. As a child focused lawyer, Kat uses her best efforts to try to resolve family law disputes outside of court; however, with training and experience dealing with issues of domestic violence, and if the need arises, Kat will not hesitate to fiercely advocate and protect her clients in court.    Kat understands that separations are extremely stressful, particularly when there is a fear of the unknown; Kat’s ability to understand her clients’ and their emotional needs offers them a safe space to ask the hard questions, and learn to trust in themselves, while they move to the other side.

In her free time, Kat enjoys training in Muay Thai, photography, playing her own instruments and attending live music events.
